History of Assumption Mission

Assumption Mission was established in 1952 when a new Assumption Church was created to serve the Black Catholic community of Basile. The new congregation was organized as a mission of St. Joseph's in Elton, Louisiana, drawing members who had previously worshiped at St. Augustine. In 1975, Assumption Church was incorporated into St. Augustine Parish, becoming the mission chapel it remains today.

Connection to St. Augustine Parish

Since 1975, Assumption Mission has been served as a mission of St. Augustine Catholic Church in Basile, sharing the same pastor and parish life. The wider Basile Catholic community traces its roots to 1913, when the first Catholic church in Basile was built as a mission of St. Anthony's in Eunice. The mission was formally established as St. Augustine Parish by Bishop Jules Jeanmard, the first bishop of the Diocese of Lafayette, with Fr. Eugene Derivas appointed as its first pastor.
