About The Cheese School of San Francisco · San Francisco

The Cheese School of San Francisco is the nation's only independent institution devoted entirely to cheese education and appreciation. Founded in 2006 by Sara Vivenzio, the school teaches cheese tasting, pairing, cheesemaking, and the cultural history of artisan cheese to everyone from curious foodies to culinary professionals. Currently owned by cheesemonger Jeanine Egan, the school is now housed inside Daily Driver's flagship location in the Dogpatch neighborhood — San Francisco's only commercial cheesemaking creamery — where it shares a 7,000-square-foot space with wood-fired ovens and an urban dairy.

The Cheese School of San Francisco began in 2006 in a small residential flat on Powell Street in North Beach, founded by Sara Vivenzio, a former Manhattan advertising executive who retrained as a cheesemonger after being inspired by her Italian family's cheesemaking heritage and the artisanal cheese movement in the Bay Area. Within a few years, Vivenzio relocated the school to a historic 1907 brick building in North Beach, then later to a location on Valencia Street in the Mission (in the same building that housed the original Saison, now Stable Cafe). In 2011, Kiri Fisher — alongside cheese educator Daphne Zepos — bought the school from Vivenzio and managed the transition to a properly licensed business, expanded the class schedule, and in 2018 moved the school to the dramatic bay-view upper floor of Ghirardelli Square, where it became a destination for public cheese classes, a retail cheese counter, cafe, catering kitchen, and private event venue. The COVID-19 pandemic devastated the school's three-legged business model (classes, retail, and catering/events), and Fisher passed away from cancer in April 2024. Before the pandemic, Fisher had been in the process of selling the school to longtime employee and friend Jeanine Egan; when that sale fell through, Egan — a former corporate manager who had worked in Paris and Berlin before becoming a cheesemonger in 2012 — worked closely with Fisher to take over day-to-day operations and ultimately completed a lengthy transfer of ownership. Under Egan, the school pivoted to virtual classes reaching students across the U.S., Canada, and Europe, then left Ghirardelli Square in early 2023 and moved into Daily Driver's flagship creamery and bagel shop at 2535 Third Street in the Dogpatch, where the two businesses share the space with opposite operating schedules (Daily Driver runs 8am–2pm for breakfast/lunch; the Cheese School runs afternoons and evenings). The Dogpatch space gives the school access to a commercial cheesemaking facility and wood-fired ovens, enabling new cheesemaking and baking classes alongside its signature tastings, pairings, farm tours, and event catering. Egan has continued to expand the school's reach with pop-ups at Levi's Plaza, the Ferry Building, and Chase Center (the Golden State Warriors' arena), and the school remains known for its signature 'Eating is Learning' philosophy, a roster of certified cheese professionals, and its status as the only U.S. institution dedicated full-time to cheese education.

About The Cheese School of San Francisco

The Cheese School of San Francisco describes itself as the only institution of its kind in the nation 'completely dedicated to the education and appreciation of all things cheese.' Built around an 'Eating is Learning' philosophy, the school has spent nearly two decades building curricula for cheese novices, food enthusiasts, and culinary professionals, with offerings that cover cheese science, fermentation, milk types, flavor profiling, wine pairing, and cheesemaking. Its mission, in the words of current owner Jeanine Egan, is 'to lift up the cheesemakers, farmers and other small producers who make things that go with cheese' and to make what can feel like a 'bougie' subject 'completely accessible.'

History & Ownership

Founded in 2006 by Sara Vivenzio — a former New York advertising executive for clients like Mercedes-Benz and Pitney Bowes — the school began as a tiny operation above a Powell Street flat in North Beach before moving into a 1907 brick building on the same street and later to Valencia Street in the Mission (in the building that housed the original Saison restaurant, now Stable Cafe). In 2011, Kiri Fisher and cheese educator Daphne Zepos purchased the school; Fisher drove its growth and in 2018 relocated it to the upper floor of Ghirardelli Square, where it became an internationally recognized destination with a retail cheese counter, cafe, classroom, and catering kitchen. The COVID-19 pandemic collapsed all three of the school's revenue streams, and Fisher passed away from cancer on April 26, 2024, at age 45. Longtime employee Jeanine Egan, who had worked in Paris and Berlin before becoming a cheesemonger in 2012, completed a transfer of ownership and now leads the school.

Classes, Pairings & Tastings

The school's flagship offering is a calendar of public classes that runs multiple sessions per week, hosted by a roster of certified cheese professionals and sensory experts. Signature classes include Cheese 101 (an introduction to cheese anatomy, milk types, and fermentation), wine-and-cheese pairings (such as the 'Think Pink' Rosé pairing), and cheese-and-chocolate pairings that lean on partnerships with local makers like Ghirardelli and Ritual Chocolate. Pairings typically come with curated accompaniments — Acme bread, sourdough crackers, housemade jam, dark chocolate, and dried fruit — and classes are designed to be educational, social, and indulgent.

  • Cheese 101 — introduction to milk types, fermentation, and flavor
  • 'Think Pink' Rosé & Cheese Pairing Class
  • Sugar Loves Mold: Dessert Wine and Cheese
  • Chocolate & cheese pairing classes (e.g., Manchego Gran Reserva + Ritual Ecuador chocolate)

  • Approximately 21 different class titles were offered in a recent spring/summer schedule

Hands-On Cheesemaking & Cooking Classes

Since moving into Daily Driver's Dogpatch flagship — home to San Francisco's only commercial cheesemaking creamery — the school has expanded into hands-on cheesemaking and wood-fired cooking classes. Students can learn to make fresh mozzarella, ricotta, goat cheese, and fromage blanc, and can participate in pizza-making classes using Daily Driver's wood-fired ovens. DIY cheesemaking kits (Mozzarella + Ricotta, and Goat Cheese) are sold online for $29 each so students can practice at home.

Private Events, Team Building & Weddings

The Cheese School is one of San Francisco's premiere event venues, capable of hosting groups of up to 100 guests across its classroom and event spaces. Corporate team-building classes are a flagship use case; the school notes that 'nothing brings colleagues together like realizing they do actually like goat cheese.' Wedding services include rehearsal dinners, intimate receptions, morning-after brunches, and the school's signature cheese-wheel wedding cakes — stacked tiers of wheels of artisan cheese that can be served in place of (or alongside) a traditional cake. The school's previous Ghirardelli location included two levels with a patio overlooking the fountain and bay views.

  • Private cheese tasting classes (in-person and virtual) for up to 100 guests

Beyond classes, the school runs a full catering operation drawing on its relationships with Bay Area cheesemakers, Acme baguettes, Ghirardelli chocolate, and seasonal organic produce. Platters and wine offerings are available for pickup or delivery, and the school's monthly Cheese Club ships curated selections to members. WeddingWire lists starting wedding packages at $4,000.
