Who was Saint Rosalia? Rosalia was a 12th-century Sicilian noblewoman who left her wealthy life to live as a hermit in a cave. She is the patron saint of Palermo. She became immensely popular in the 17th century when, during a plague, her remains were discovered in a cave. Legend says her relics were carried through the streets, and the plague immediately ended.
