The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Springfield, Illinois, had its cornerstone laid on August 14, 1927, and was dedicated on October 14, 1928, under James Aloysius Griffin, the fourth bishop of the diocese and the first to be seated in Springfield. It replaced an earlier Immaculate Conception church (1858-1928) after the diocesan seat moved to Springfield in 1923. The cathedral serves as the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Springfield in Illinois.
