History & Significance
Basilica · Est. First church completed 1824; current building dedicated 1909
St. Peter's Catholic parish in Columbia, South Carolina, traces to 1820-1824, when its first church (designed by noted South Carolina architect Robert Mills) was built to serve Irish canal laborers; it became known as the "Mother Church of the Midlands." The present Gothic Revival church, designed by Frank Pierce Milburn, was constructed in 1906-1908 and dedicated in January 1909. On June 24, 2018, the Vatican designated it a Minor Basilica, the first in South Carolina. It belongs to the Diocese of Charleston.
