St. Paul Cathedral

History & Significance

Cathedral · Est. Current cathedral dedicated October 24, 1906 (parish founded 1833)

St. Paul Cathedral in Pittsburgh's Oakland neighborhood is the seat (mother church) of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh. The original St. Paul's parish was dedicated in 1833 and became a cathedral when the diocese was erected in 1843; after fire and downtown grade changes, a third cathedral was built on Grant Street and later relocated. The present Gothic Revival cathedral, designed by Chicago architects Egan and Prindeville with Cologne Cathedral as inspiration, had its cornerstone laid in 1903 and was dedicated on October 24, 1906. It remains the active cathedral of the diocese.
