St. Joseph Cathedral

History & Significance

Cathedral · Est. Parish founded 1874; current cathedral dedicated 1941

St. Joseph Cathedral in San Diego's Cortez Hill neighborhood traces to an 1874 parish founded by Father Antonio Ubach on land donated by Alonzo Horton, with the first church dedicated in 1875. When the Vatican erected the Diocese of San Diego in 1936, St. Joseph's Church became its cathedral. After a 1937 fire, the present Mission Revival cathedral was built on the same site and dedicated in 1941 by Bishop Charles F. Buddy. It remains the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego.
