Cathedral · Est. Parish founded and church dedicated 1869; became a cathedral in 1884
Saint Joseph Church in Manchester, New Hampshire was founded in 1869 to serve Irish immigrants and dedicated that April by Boston Archbishop John J. Williams, with prolific church architect Patrick C. Keeley designing the building. When Pope Leo XIII erected the Diocese of Manchester in 1884, the parish became its cathedral, and Denis M. Bradley was consecrated as the diocese's first bishop. It continues today as the seat of the Bishop of Manchester and the mother church of the diocese, which covers the entire state of New Hampshire.
