St. Eugene's Parish was erected in 1950 by Archbishop John J. Mitty of San Francisco, and its church was dedicated on November 25, 1951. When Pope John XXIII established the Diocese of Santa Rosa in California in 1962 from territory of the Archdiocese of San Francisco and the Diocese of Sacramento, St. Eugene's Church became its cathedral, with Leo T. Maher serving as the diocese's first bishop. It remains the cathedral church and seat of the Diocese of Santa Rosa, serving an active parish in Santa Rosa, California.
