St. Agnes Cathedral traces to an 1887 Catholic community in Rockville Centre, New York, with the present church—designed by architect Gustave E. Steinback—dedicated in 1935. In 1957 Pope Pius XII established the Diocese of Rockville Centre, separating Nassau and Suffolk Counties on Long Island, and designated St. Agnes as its cathedral. Bishop Walter P. Kellenberg was installed as the first bishop in May 1957. The cathedral remains the seat of the Diocese of Rockville Centre; Mother Teresa visited in 1986.
