The Shrine Church of Our Lady of Solace was founded around 1900 by Rev. Joseph Francis Brophy, later nicknamed "the Apostle of Coney Island," and has served as the only Catholic faith community in Coney Island, Brooklyn since its beginning. It was designated a Shrine Church in 1905 by Pope Pius X. The present church building, completed in 1925, was designed by architect Robert J. Reiley. The parish belongs to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn.
