St. Joseph Cathedral in downtown Columbus, Ohio, had construction begin in 1866 and was consecrated on October 20, 1878, by Bishop Sylvester H. Rosecrans, the first bishop of the Diocese of Columbus (erected by Pope Pius IX in 1868). Designed in the Gothic Revival style by architects Michael Harding and Robert T. Brookes in ashlar stone, it serves as the cathedral and seat of the Diocese of Columbus. Bishop Rosecrans died the day after the consecration and is interred beneath the main altar.
