History & Significance
Cathedral · Est. Dedicated June 6, 1953 (Sacred Heart became the cathedral in 1944)
Sacred Heart Cathedral is the mother church and seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Salina, Kansas. The parish church became a cathedral on December 23, 1944, when Pope Pius XII transferred the diocesan see from Concordia to Salina. The present cathedral, designed by Cincinnati architect Edward J. Schulte, had its cornerstone laid in 1951 and was dedicated by Bishop Francis Thill on June 6, 1953. Its rounded exterior walls evoke the region's grain elevators, symbolizing the Church as God's granary.
