Cathedral · Est. Parish established 1877; current church dedicated September 25, 1898
The Pro-Cathedral of St. Mary in Bismarck, North Dakota, traces to a parish established in 1877, with its present church dedicated September 25, 1898. When the Diocese of Bismarck was erected in 1910, its first bishop, Vincent de Paul Wehrle, OSB, chose St. Mary's as the pro-cathedral and his episcopal seat, a role it held until the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit was completed in 1945. The historic title of pro-cathedral was restored to St. Mary's on September 8, 2020. It serves the Roman Catholic Diocese of Bismarck.
