History & Significance

Cathedral · Est. Dedicated November 21, 1875

Holy Name Cathedral was dedicated on November 21, 1875, replacing the Cathedral of Saint Mary, which was destroyed in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Designed by Brooklyn architect Patrick Charles Keely in the Gothic Revival style, it was built at a cost of about $260,000. It was elevated to full cathedral status in 1880 with the establishment of the Archdiocese of Chicago and the installation of its first archbishop, Patrick Augustine Feehan. It serves today as the mother church and cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago.
