856 Pacific St., Brooklyn, New York, 11238History & Significance
Cathedral · Est. Parish founded 1850-1851; current church dedicated May 3, 1914
St. Joseph's parish was founded around 1850-1851 to serve Brooklyn's growing immigrant population, including Irish famine refugees. The present Spanish Colonial-style church on Pacific Street in Prospect Heights was begun in 1912 and dedicated on May 3, 1914, replacing an earlier 1861 building. On February 14, 2013, Pope Benedict XVI approved Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio's petition to designate it co-cathedral of the Diocese of Brooklyn, and it was dedicated as such on May 13, 2014. It now shares cathedral status with the Cathedral Basilica of St. James.
