The Cathedral Shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe (Cathedral Santuario de Guadalupe) in downtown Dallas had its cornerstone laid June 17, 1898, and was dedicated October 26, 1902 by Bishop Edward Dunne, having been championed by pastor Father Jeffrey A. Hartnett, who died serving the faithful during the 1899 smallpox epidemic. Designed by noted Texas architect Nicholas J. Clayton in red brick and limestone with Gothic Revival features, it serves as the cathedral church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Dallas.
