About Cathedral Our Lady of Sorrows · Limeira, São Paulo
The Catedral Diocesana Nossa Senhora das Dores (Cathedral of Our Lady of Sorrows) is the mother church and seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Limeira, in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Located on Praça Dr. Luciano Esteves in the central district of Limeira, it is the oldest parish in the city, founded in 1824 (with the first chapel raised in 1826) by the pioneers of the Tatuiby settlement, including Bento Manoel de Barros, the 1st Baron of Campinas. The current cathedral was inaugurated in 1950 on the site of the 1876 Matriz, which had been demolished in the 1940s; it serves the people of central Limeira through a daily and Sunday Mass schedule, a parish secretariat, the attached chapel of Nossa Senhora da Boa Morte e Assunção, the chapel of São José at the Dominican Colégio São José, the chapel of Nossa Senhora do Perpétuo Socorro, and pastoral care at the UNIMED hospital.

Why belong here
The cathedral is the historic heart of Catholic life in central Limeira, the seat of the diocesan bishop and the mother parish of the diocese, and welcomes a large share of the city's population thanks to its central location. It offers a complete weekly schedule of Masses (including a daily 7:00 Mass, an additional 11:30 Mass Tuesday through Friday, and three Sunday Masses), a novena and solemn feast in honour of its patroness Our Lady of Sorrows each September, the pastoral care of the UNIMED hospital chapel, an associated school chapel at the Dominican Colégio São José, and the regular work of diocesan liturgical and catechetical teams. Its pastoral council, leigos ministros, C.A.E., the Equipe de Eventos, the Coral Nossa Senhora das Dores, and the ongoing social outreach of the present pastor (food distribution, accessibility improvements, revitalization of the square) make it a parish with deep roots in the city and an active engagement with Limeira's wider community.

History of the Cathedral and the City
The Catedral Nossa Senhora das Dores is the mother church of Limeira, founded in 1824 (the date of its creation as a parish) and materialized in 1826 with the building of the Capela de Nossa Senhora das Dores de Tatuiby. The settlement of Tatuiby and the chapel rose together, organized around the patronage of Our Lady of Sorrows. The first wooden chapel, the 1876 Matriz that replaced it, and the present cathedral (inaugurated in 1950 after the demolition of the 1876 building in the 1940s) form three successive chapters of the same story. The history of the parish and the history of the city of Limeira are explicitly intertwined: the locality was officially known as 'Nossa Senhora das Dores de Tatuiby' until Lei Provincial n° 13, of 18 April 1863, renamed it Limeira.
- 1824 – parish creation
- 1826 – Capela de Nossa Senhora das Dores de Tatuiby built with the settlement
- 1876 – new Matriz inaugurated
- 1940s – 1876 church demolished
- 1950 – present cathedral inaugurated
- 19 May 1976 – Diocese of Limeira erected by Pope Paul VI; parish becomes cathedral
Founder and Early Benefactors
The pioneer-builder of the original chapel was Bento Manoel de Barros, one of the first settlers of the sertão de Tatuiby. In recognition of his contribution to the construction of two of Limeira's earliest churches — the Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora das Dores and the Igreja da Boa Morte e Assumpção — he was granted the noble title of 1st Barão de Campinas. The Barão and other local landowners, led by Senator Nicolau Pereira de Campos Vergueiro, had earlier pressed the provincial governor for a road from the Morro Azul to São Carlos (Campinas) to facilitate the export of sugar from the region's engenhos; the construction of that road in 1826 was the direct trigger for the establishment of the povoado and of its chapel.
Elevation to Cathedral (1976)
On 19 May 1976, Pope Paul VI established the Diocese of Limeira, detaching its territory from the dioceses of Campinas, Piracicaba and São Carlos. The parish church on Praça Dr. Luciano Esteves was elevated to the dignity of cathedral, becoming the cathedra (seat) of the diocesan bishop and the principal church of the new circumscription. The creation of the diocese was a direct response to the population growth of the region and to the need for a closer, more accessible ecclesiastical structure for the faithful of Limeira and surrounding municipalities.

Patroness and Feasts
The patroness of the cathedral — and historically of the city itself — is Our Lady of Sorrows (Nossa Senhora das Dores), whose feast is celebrated on 15 September. The annual novena leading up to the feast gathers the faithful, the diocesan bishop, the parish team, the Equipe de Eventos, the lay ministers, the catechesis, the C.A.E., the collaborators and the Coral Nossa Senhora das Dores. The solemn day begins with Mass presided by the diocesan bishop for the intentions of the entire diocese, continues with a Mass presided by the parish priest for the intentions of the parishioners, and ends with the traditional procession through the central streets of Limeira, the coronation of the patroness, and the distribution of the 'bolo da padroeira' to the community.
