History & Significance
Cathedral · Est. Cornerstone laid 1912; dedicated 1913
Catholic roots in Pueblo trace to 1860, when Fr. Joseph Projectus Machebeuf brought the faith to the area. The present Sacred Heart church was planned by Msgr. Thomas Wolohan; its cornerstone was laid May 5, 1912, and it was dedicated in 1913 by Archbishop Nicholas Matz of Denver, built for about $48,000 with the help of roughly 190 families. On November 15, 1941, it was elevated to a cathedral with the creation of the Diocese of Pueblo, which it serves as the bishop's seat.
