History & Significance
Cathedral · Est. Parish founded 1905; church dedicated 1930; cathedral since 1938
Most Blessed Sacrament Parish was founded in 1905 under Bishop John Samuel Foley, with the Norman/Neo-Gothic church designed by Cleveland architect Henry A. Walsh; construction ran 1913-1915 and the building was dedicated on Thanksgiving Day 1930. In 1938 the Vatican approved Archbishop Edward Mooney's petition to make it the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Detroit, replacing St. Patrick's; Mooney consecrated the completed structure in 1951.
