History & Significance

Cathedral · Est. Dedicated 1942 (as "new" St. Mary's); became a cathedral in 1962

The Cathedral of the Annunciation in Stockton, California, was approved in 1941 by San Francisco Archbishop John J. Mitty and dedicated in 1942 as the "new" St. Mary's parish, designed by architect Henry A. Minton and built by Stockton contractors Shepherd and Green. When the Diocese of Stockton was erected in 1962, its first bishop, Hugh A. Donohoe, chose the church as his cathedral for its capacity and beauty, and it was renamed the Cathedral of the Annunciation. It remains the seat of the Diocese of Stockton.
