History & Significance
Cathedral · Est. Parish founded 1917; current cathedral dedicated May 26, 1955
St. Raymond Nonnatus parish was founded in Joliet, Illinois, in 1917. When Pope Pius XII established the Diocese of Joliet on December 11, 1948, St. Raymond's was designated its cathedral; as the existing church proved inadequate, a new Classical Revival cathedral was built (1952-1955) at a cost of $2.4 million and dedicated on May 26, 1955. Bishop Martin McNamara celebrated the first Mass in the new building on December 8, 1954. It remains the mother church and seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Joliet in Illinois.
