History & Significance

Cathedral · Est. Parish founded 1846; current cathedral dedicated 1900

The original wood-frame St. Peter's church was dedicated on August 23, 1846, by Bishop John J. Chanche, first bishop of the Diocese of Natchez; it was burned during the Civil War (1862). The present brick cathedral, begun in 1897, was dedicated June 3, 1900. After the see moved to Jackson and was renamed Natchez-Jackson, the church became a co-cathedral in 1957 and, upon formation of the Diocese of Biloxi in 1977, the cathedral of the Diocese of Jackson, Mississippi, which it serves today.
