The Cathedral of Saint Peter the Apostle in Kansas City, Kansas, traces to St. Peter's Parish, founded in 1907 in the then-Diocese of Leavenworth by Rev. Bernard Kelly under Bishop Thomas Lillis. The present Gothic Revival church of Carthage stone was dedicated September 5, 1927, after the parish outgrew its original 1908 building. When Pope Pius XII erected the Diocese of Kansas City in 1947, Bishop George Donnelly consecrated St. Peter's as its cathedral in 1948. It now serves as the seat of the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas, elevated to archdiocese in 1952.
