The Cathedral of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception in Lafayette, Indiana traces to an 1843 parish of Irish Catholic families; the present Gothic Revival church broke ground in 1861 and was dedicated August 15, 1866, with a central tower rising about 170 feet. It became the cathedral in 1944 when Pope Pius XII created the Diocese of Lafayette-in-Indiana from the Diocese of Fort Wayne. In August 2020, under Bishop Timothy Doherty, it was united with St. Ann Church and Shrine to form a single pastorate.
