History & Significance

The Cathedral of Saint Joseph is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Commissioned by Bishop Thomas O'Gorman and designed by architect Emmanuel Louis Masqueray in the Renaissance Revival style, its cornerstone was laid in 1916; the first Mass was offered in the unfinished building on December 8, 1918, and the cathedral was dedicated on May 7, 1919. It remains an active parish and the mother church of the diocese, and underwent a major restoration completed around its 2018-2019 centennial.

  • Listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a contributing property of the Cathedral Historic District (added June 5, 1974)
