History & Significance

Cathedral · Est. Original cathedral dedicated December 27, 1903; current cathedral completed 1993

St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Cathedral in Munhall, Pennsylvania, traces to a Carpatho-Rusyn steelworker community near Carnegie's Homestead mill, chartered in 1897. The original cathedral, designed by Hungarian-born architect Titus de Bobula and modeled on the Holy Cross Cathedral in Uzhhorod, was dedicated on December 27, 1903, and named the cathedral of the Ruthenian exarchate in 1929. It serves as the cathedral (mother church) of the Byzantine Catholic Archeparchy of Pittsburgh. The congregation moved to a new cathedral completed in 1993; the 1903 building became the National Carpatho-Rusyn Cultural and Educational Center in 2004.
