History & Significance
Cathedral · Est. Parish founded 1898; church dedicated 1960; became cathedral in 1969
St. John the Baptist parish was founded in 1898 in the Cleveland area, with Father Peter Keselak as its first pastor, serving Carpatho-Rusyn (Ruthenian) immigrants of the Byzantine Rite. After earlier buildings, a new church was built on Snow Road in Parma and dedicated in November 1960. When the Ruthenian Byzantine Catholic Eparchy of Parma was established in 1969, St. John's became its cathedral and episcopal seat. In October 2024, Bishop Robert Pipta transferred cathedral status to the former Holy Spirit Church in Parma.
