History & Significance
Cathedral · Est. Parish founded 1912; present cathedral dedicated 1975; cathedral status 1982
St. George Cathedral in Canton, Ohio, traces to a Romanian Greek (Byzantine) Catholic parish established September 29, 1912 by Rev. Aurel Hatiegan and roughly 65 founding members. The present church was dedicated in 1975 and became a cathedral in 1982 when the Apostolic Exarchate for Romanian Catholics in the United States was erected, with Bishop Louis Puscas choosing Canton as its seat. Pope John Paul II elevated the exarchate to a full eparchy (diocese) on April 11, 1987. It remains the cathedral church of the Romanian Catholic Eparchy of St. George's in Canton, serving Romanian Byzantine Rite Catholics nationwide.
