History & Significance

Cathedral · Est. Building dedicated 1846 (as Church of the Pilgrims); Maronite dedication 1944; cathedral since 1977

Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Cathedral occupies a Romanesque Revival church in Brooklyn Heights, designed by Richard Upjohn and dedicated in 1846 as the Congregational Church of the Pilgrims, the first Romanesque Revival ecclesiastical building in America. The Maronite parish, incorporated in 1903 under Father Khairallah Stephen, acquired the building in 1943 and dedicated it as Our Lady of Lebanon in 1944. On June 27, 1977, the see of the Eparchy of Saint Maron was transferred from Detroit to Brooklyn, and the church was designated its cathedral. It serves as the seat of the Maronite Catholic Eparchy of Saint Maron of Brooklyn.
