History & Significance

Cathedral · Est. Parish established 1945; church dedicated 1967; cathedral since 1988

Christ the King Parish was established in the Diocese of Covington on July 22, 1945, originally worshiping at St. Catherine's Academy chapel before moving to its present Lexington site in 1946. The present church and rectory were built from 1965 to 1967 for about $1.5 million and dedicated in May 1967. When Pope John Paul II established the Diocese of Lexington in 1988, the church became the Cathedral of Christ the King, seat of the new diocese, with the Most Rev. J. Kendrick Williams installed as its first bishop. It serves as the mother church of the 50-county Diocese of Lexington.
