The Basilica of St. Stanislaus, Bishop and Martyr was founded by Polish immigrants who settled in Chicopee, Massachusetts, in the 1880s and sought a church of their own; the parish was organized beginning in 1890-1891. The present brownstone church was completed in 1908 to designs by the firm of Robert J. Reiley and Gustave E. Steinback. Pope John Paul II elevated the church to the rank of minor basilica by decree on June 25, 1991. It serves the Roman Catholic Diocese of Springfield in Massachusetts.
