History
The Secular Franciscan Order (Ordo Franciscanus Saecularis, OFS) traces its origins to St. Francis of Assisi in the early 13th century, when lay men and women wished to follow his Gospel way of life without leaving their families and ordinary occupations. Originally known as the 'Third Order' of St. Francis, it has existed for some 800 years.
Secular Franciscans live a rule of life centered on conversion, prayer, simplicity, peacemaking, and care for creation, gathering in local fraternities. The order has counted many saints among its members.
Today the OFS is a public association of the faithful present worldwide, with members committed to bringing the Franciscan charism into secular life.
