History

OCIA — the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (formerly known as RCIA) — is the Church's process for welcoming adults who wish to become Catholic, whether they are unbaptized or coming from another Christian tradition. It was restored in its current form after the Second Vatican Council, recovering the ancient catechumenate of the early Church.

The journey unfolds in stages — inquiry, the catechumenate, purification and enlightenment during Lent, and mystagogy after initiation — accompanied by prayer, formation, and the support of a parish community. Many enter the Church at the Easter Vigil.

Every Catholic parish offers OCIA, making it the universal doorway into full communion with the Catholic Church.

What they do

  • Welcome and accompany those exploring the Catholic faith
  • Form inquirers and catechumens through the stages of initiation
  • Prepare candidates to receive Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist
  • Support the newly initiated through mystagogy

How to get involved

Anyone curious about becoming Catholic — or returning to the Church — can simply contact a local parish and ask about OCIA. There is no cost and no obligation to begin; you can start by attending inquiry sessions.
