History
Catholic campus ministry centers are widely known as 'Newman Centers,' named for St. John Henry Newman, the 19th-century convert and cardinal whose writings on faith and university life inspired Catholic ministry to students. The first Newman Club in the United States dates to the 1890s at the University of Pennsylvania.
Newman Centers provide a spiritual home for Catholic students at secular colleges and universities — offering Mass, the sacraments, Bible studies, fellowship, and service opportunities away from home.
Today Newman Centers and Catholic campus ministries serve students at colleges and universities across the country, often working alongside organizations like FOCUS.
