History
The March for Life began in 1974, on the first anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision, when Nellie Gray led a gathering of around 20,000 people in Washington, D.C. to peacefully protest legalized abortion.
What was intended as a one-time event became an annual tradition. Each January, hundreds of thousands of people — many of them young — travel to the nation's capital to march from the National Mall to the Supreme Court, witnessing to the dignity of human life.
The March for Life Education and Defense Fund now also hosts state marches and year-round educational programs, continuing as the largest pro-life event in the world.
