History
The Cursillo Movement (from the Spanish for 'short course') began in Mallorca, Spain, in the 1940s, with the first Cursillo de Cristiandad held in 1944. It grew out of efforts to form lay leaders who could evangelize their environments.
The movement centers on a three-day retreat experience followed by ongoing small-group reunions and gatherings (Ultreya) that sustain participants in living and sharing their faith. Cursillo spread from Spain to the Americas and around the world in the decades that followed.
Today Cursillo is active in many dioceses and language groups, having influenced numerous other renewal movements.
